Biography

Overview

Adrian Smith is a Republican U.S. Representative from Nebraska's 3rd congressional district, serving since 2007. A native of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Smith previously served in the Nebraska Legislature from 1999 to 2007. He is the dean of Nebraska's congressional delegation as of 2022. Smith has represented one of the nation's most Republican districts, which spans nearly 65,000 square miles and 68.5 of Nebraska's 93 counties.

Career

Smith has served nine consecutive terms in the House since 2007 and previously served two terms in the Nebraska Legislature. He has built a legislative record focused on rural economic development, healthcare access, and tax policy. Notable achievements include leadership in the Rural Caucus and sponsoring bills addressing healthcare workforce development (veterinarians, pharmacists, genetic counselors) and senior care services. His sponsorship of agriculture-focused bills like the Ethanol for America Act reflects his district's interests.

Prior political experience

Smith was first elected to the U.S. House in 2006 with 55% of the vote, defeating Democrat Scott Kleeb's 45% in a competitive race described as the closest a Democrat had come to winning the district in 16 years. He won his 1998 Nebraska legislative race defeating incumbent Joyce Hillman 55%-45%, and was reelected unopposed in 2002. Subsequent House elections show consistent Republican dominance: he has been reelected in 2008 (77%-23%), 2010 (70%-18%), 2012 (74%-26%), 2014 (75%-25%), 2016 (unopposed), 2018 (77%-23%), 2020 (79%), 2022 (78%), and 2024 (80%) margins.
