Overview
Al Green is a Democrat serving Texas's 9th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2005. He is a lawyer who previously served as a justice of the peace in Harris County, Texas from 1977 to 2004. Green focuses on financial services, fair housing, and fair hiring practices for minorities and low-income communities.
Career
Green has been re-elected 10 times since first entering Congress in 2005. He has championed fair housing and civil rights issues throughout his tenure. He has filed articles of impeachment against President Trump multiple times across two administrations, though none have succeeded. In 2025, he was censured for interrupting President Trump's address to Congress while protesting cuts to Medicaid. He has been active on financial regulation issues, questioning bank CEOs on diversity and historical connections to slavery.
Prior political experience
Green first won election to the U.S. House in 2004, defeating incumbent Rep. Chris Bell by 35 percentage points in the Democratic primary for Texas's 9th congressional district. He then won the 2004 general election. He has been re-elected 10 times since his initial election. In 2026, following Republican-led redistricting that made his former district more favorable to Republicans, Green ran in the 18th congressional district Democratic primary.
