Biography

Overview

Ami Bera is a physician and Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California's 6th congressional district, serving since 2013. Before Congress, he worked as a physician and served as chief medical officer for Sacramento County. He holds a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and an M.D. from UC Irvine, and previously served as a clinical professor at the UC Davis School of Medicine.

Career

During his first five terms (2013-2022), Bera cosponsored 95 bills that became law. He successfully championed the continuation of the Nutria Eradication and Control Act for California, protecting delta levees from invasive rodents. During the 118th Congress, he was a cosponsor of 15 bills that became law, including the bipartisan stillbirth prevention measure. He has voted against healthcare repeal efforts and supported the Affordable Care Act. In 2022, he introduced the Affordable Rabies Treatment for Uninsured Act after being bitten by a rabid fox on Capitol Hill.

Prior political experience

Bera first ran in 2010, challenging Republican Dan Lungren in California's 3rd district. Though he raised more money than the incumbent, Lungren defeated him 51%-43%. In 2012, Bera ran a rematch against Lungren in the renumbered 7th district and won 51%-49% in a very close race. He won reelection in 2014 with 50.4% against Doug Ose, in 2016 with 51% against Scott Jones (margin of 4,802 votes), in 2018 with 55% against Andrew Grant, and in 2020 with 56% against Buzz Patterson. He has filed to run for California's 3rd congressional district in 2026.
