Overview

Andrea Salinas is a Democratic U.S. Representative for Oregon's 6th congressional district, serving since 2023. She is one of the first two Hispanic women elected to Congress from Oregon. Before her federal service, Salinas served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, including time as majority whip. She has a background in legislative work, having previously served as a legislative aide to U.S. Senator Harry Reid and Representatives Pete Stark and Darlene Hooley.

Career

In Congress, Salinas has cosponsored legislation providing $300 million in federal funding for mental health services in public schools. In 2023, she and Diana Harshbarger introduced a bipartisan bill to provide $10 million for telehealth services in rural areas. In the Oregon House, she served as majority whip and chaired the House Committee on Health Care. She has sponsored 20 bills in the current Congress addressing areas including mental health, rural development, agriculture, and infrastructure.

Prior political experience

Salinas won Oregon's 6th congressional district in the 2022 election with 50.0% of the vote, defeating Republican Mike Erickson in an open-seat race. After the election, Erickson filed a lawsuit challenging statements in her campaign advertisements, though he later indicated he was not seeking to overturn the election results.
