Biography
Overview
Andrew Ogles is a Republican U.S. Representative from Tennessee's 5th congressional district, serving since 2023. Previously, he was mayor of Maury County from 2018 to 2022. Born June 18, 1971, Ogles graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies. He is described by media as being on the far-right of the political spectrum and is known for strong support of Donald Trump.
Career
Since taking office in January 2023, Ogles has introduced numerous bills addressing immigration enforcement, financial regulations, and cybersecurity. He was one of 19 Republicans to vote against Kevin McCarthy for House Speaker and is a member of the Freedom Caucus. He filed articles of impeachment against federal judges who ruled against the Trump administration and introduced a resolution to modify the 22nd Amendment to allow presidents with non-consecutive terms to run for a third term. In his Maury County mayoralty, he vetoed budget increases over tax concerns.
Prior political experience
Ogles was first elected to Congress in 2022. He won the Republican primary on August 4, 2022, and won the general election in November 2022 with 56% of the vote against Democrat Heidi Campbell's 42%. The district had been redrawn to favor Republicans, voting 12 percentage points for Donald Trump in 2020. Ogles was re-elected in 2024, improving on his 2022 performance, with the Republican primary proving more competitive than the general election. He made unsuccessful bids for Congress in 2002 and the Tennessee Senate in 2006, both times losing in the Republican primary.
