Biography
Overview
Angela D. Alsobrooks is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Maryland, serving since January 2025. A lawyer by training, she previously served as Prince George's County State's Attorney (2011-2018) and County Executive (2018-2024), making history as Maryland's first Black female county executive. She defeated former Republican Governor Larry Hogan in the 2024 Senate race with 54.6% of the vote and is Maryland's first African American senator and the third Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
Career
As state's attorney (2011-2018), Alsobrooks oversaw a 50% decline in violent crime while increasing prosecutions for property crimes and establishing a Special Prosecutions Unit for public corruption and police misconduct. As county executive (2018-2024), she became Maryland's first Black female county executive, managed the county's COVID-19 response, proposed police funding increases and youth intervention programs, championed housing and rent protections, and supported FBI headquarters relocation to Greenbelt, Maryland. In the Senate, she co-led efforts to add the Community Investment and Prosperity Act to the bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act.
Prior political experience
Alsobrooks was first elected Prince George's County State's Attorney in 2010 and reelected in 2014. She ran unopposed in the 2018 county executive general election after her Republican opponent withdrew, winning with 98.9% of the vote. She was reelected county executive in 2022. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, she defeated David Trone in the Democratic primary on May 14, 2024, with 54% of the vote before defeating Republican Larry Hogan in the general election on November 5, 2024, with 54.6% of the vote.
