Biography

Overview

Ann Wagner is a Republican U.S. House representative from Missouri's 2nd congressional district, serving since 2013. She previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg from 2005 to 2009 and chaired the Missouri Republican Party from 1999 to 2005. She is generally regarded as part of the moderate faction of her party. Her district, located mostly in St. Louis County, is heavily suburban and the state's wealthiest.

Career

Wagner's notable legislative achievements include sponsoring the Stop Advertising Victims of Exploitation Act of 2014 to combat online sex trafficking, and the Retail Investor Protection Act (passed the House in 2015). She has worked on anti-human trafficking legislation and has introduced multiple bills addressing financial consumer protection. Her HR 1512 Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act was enacted. As Missouri Republican Party chair, she oversaw the party taking majority control of both state legislative chambers for the first time in over 40 years, and helped Republicans gain complete control of state government for the first time since 1921.

Prior political experience

Wagner won the Republican primary for Missouri's 2nd congressional district in 2012 with 66% of the vote and won the general election by 23 points. In 2014, she ran unopposed in the Republican primary and increased her general election margin. In 2018, she faced a closer-than-expected race against Democrat Cort VanOstran, winning with 51.2% to VanOstran's 47.2%. In 2020, the race was listed as a toss-up by Cook Political Report, but Wagner defeated state senator Jill Schupp by just over six percentage points. She was reelected in 2022 against Trish Gunby.
