Biography

Overview

Ashley Hinson is a Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa's 2nd congressional district, serving since 2021. She is the first woman to represent Iowa's 67th state House district and one of the first Republican women to represent Iowa in Congress. Before her federal service, Hinson worked as a journalist and news anchor for KCRG-TV in Iowa and served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 2017 to 2021. She is a candidate for Iowa's U.S. Senate seat in 2026.

Career

In the Iowa House, Hinson chaired the Transportation Committee and served on judiciary and public safety committees. In Congress, she has focused on rural and agricultural issues, introducing the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression Act to address state-level agricultural production standards. She has worked on women's health legislation, child care access, and rural healthcare expansion. Her 2024 reelection victory with 57.1% of the vote reflects constituent support in her district.

Prior political experience

Hinson was first elected to Iowa's 67th House District in 2016, defeating Democrat Mark Seidl 62.5%-37.5%. She won reelection to the state House in 2018 against teacher Eric Gjerde with 52%-48%. In 2020, she won the U.S. House seat in Iowa's 1st congressional district, defeating incumbent Democrat Abby Finkenauer with 51.2% of the vote. Following 2020 redistricting, she sought reelection in the redrawn 2nd district in 2022, defeating Democratic state Senator Liz Mathis. She was reelected in 2024 with 57.1% of the vote, defeating Democrat Sarah Corkery.
