Overview

Ben Cline is a Republican U.S. Representative serving Virginia's 6th congressional district since 2019. He is a lawyer who previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 to 2018, representing the 24th district. Born February 29, 1972, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, he grew up in Rockbridge County, Virginia, and is a graduate of Bates College and the University of Richmond School of Law. Before his election to Congress, Cline maintained a private law practice and previously served as an assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Rockingham County and Harrisonburg.

Career

In the Virginia House of Delegates, Cline was named Legislator of the Year by the Virginia Court Clerks' Association in 2011 and the Virginia Sheriff's Association in 2012. He authored bills reforming the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and created a searchable database of state agency expenditures. He negotiated compromises on criminal justice issues, including restrictions on restraints for pregnant inmates. In Congress, Cline has focused on regulatory reform and government accountability through sponsored legislation, though most bills remain in committee. He voted to provide Israel support following the October 7 attacks.

Prior political experience

Cline first won election to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2002 with 57% of the vote in a special election. He was reelected in 2003 (69%), 2005 (62%), ran unopposed in 2007, won in 2009 (71%), ran unopposed in 2011 and 2013, and won in 2015 (71%) and 2017 (72%). He was elected to Congress on November 6, 2018, with 59.8% of the vote, defeating Democrat Jennifer Lewis, described as historically low for his district. He was reelected to Congress in 2020 with 64.7% of the vote over Democrat Nicholas Betts, and in 2022 with 64.4% of the vote over Democrat Jennifer Lewis in the redrawn district.
