Biography

Overview

Bill Hagerty is a Republican U.S. Senator from Tennessee, serving since 2021. He previously served as the 30th U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2017 to 2019 under President Donald Trump. Hagerty has a background in private equity, having co-founded Hagerty Peterson & Company, and served as Tennessee's Commissioner of Economic and Community Development from 2011 to 2014, where he helped bring major corporate investments to the state and led efforts to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Nashville.

Career

Hagerty's major legislative achievement was drafting and championing the GENIUS Act, signed into law by President Trump on July 18, 2025, creating the first major federal cryptocurrency regulatory framework for stablecoins. During his ambassadorship, he led successful efforts to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Nashville, officially selected in December 2017. In the Senate, he has used procedural tactics to influence major legislation, most notably in August 2021 when he delayed a vote on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. He has also introduced legislation to protect American companies' property rights abroad and increase enforcement against sanctuary cities.

Prior political experience

Hagerty was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020, winning the Republican primary on August 6, 2020, and defeating Democratic nominee Marquita Bradshaw in the general election by a vote of 1,840,926 to 1,040,691. He took office on January 3, 2021. He ran for the Senate seat being vacated by Lamar Alexander and received Trump's endorsement in July 2019, before officially launching his campaign in September 2019.
