Overview

Brad Sherman is a Democrat representing California's 32nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected in 1996, he is now serving his 12th term in Congress. Before joining Congress, Sherman was a certified public accountant who worked at a major accounting firm and served on the California State Board of Equalization from 1991 to 1997. He holds a law degree from Harvard Law School and a degree in political science from UCLA.

Career

Sherman has been a vocal advocate for financial regulation, notably leading a House revolt against the 2008 Emergency Economic Stabilization Act as an early critic. He has introduced over 20 bills regarding Iran sanctions and actively champions support for Israel. As a senior member of Foreign Affairs, he has focused on Armenian genocide recognition and pushed for stronger China trade policies. In consumer protection, he has worked on housing affordability and subscription cancellation issues. He earned 100% ratings from the AFL-CIO, SEIU, AFSCME, ACLU, and teachers' unions on various votes.

Prior political experience

Sherman was first elected to Congress in 1996, defeating Republican Rich Sybert 49%-44% in the general election after winning a seven-candidate Democratic primary with 54% of the vote. He was reelected in 1998 with 57% of the vote. Since then, he has been reelected every two years with margins of at least 62%. In 2012, redistricting combined his seat with that of fellow Democrat Howard Berman, and Sherman won the primary 42%-32% and the general election 60%-40%. In 2020, he received 69.5% of the vote (240,038 votes).
