Biography
Overview
Brett Guthrie is a Republican U.S. Representative from Kentucky's 2nd congressional district, serving since 2009. The district includes Fort Knox, Owensboro, Bowling Green, and part of eastern Louisville. Guthrie is a former Kentucky State Senator (1999–2008) and career military officer who served as a field artillery officer in the 101st Airborne Division.
Career
Guthrie successfully passed the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act of 2025, legislation addressing substance abuse treatment and prevention. He previously introduced the Missing Children's Assistance Reauthorization Act of 2013 and co-authored the PROSPER Act to reform federal student loan programs. He has consistently supported energy sector legislation and regulatory modernization initiatives throughout his tenure.
Prior political experience
Guthrie was first elected to Congress in 2008, defeating Democratic State Senator David Boswell by approximately 15,500 votes in a competitive race. He won reelection in 2010 by a large margin, in 2012 with over 64% of the vote, and has continued to win his district since. His 2008 victory came in a district with strong Democratic registration advantages, though voters favored conservative social policies.
