Biography

Overview

Brian J. Mast is a Republican U.S. Representative from Florida's 21st congressional district, serving since 2017. A decorated Army veteran who lost both legs while serving as an explosive ordnance disposal technician in Afghanistan in 2010, Mast received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He is currently in his fifth House term and chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Career

Mast opened the first House member office inside a federal agency—a Veterans Affairs facility in West Palm Beach in 2018 (later closed by the VA in 2019). He was considered by the Trump administration for Secretary of Veterans Affairs. He was ranked the 32nd most bipartisan member of the House in the first session of the 115th Congress. His legislative focus centers on veterans benefits, military recognition, and environmental protection, particularly related to Florida waterways and the sugar industry. He has been critical of Obama-era foreign policy, particularly regarding the Middle East and Iran nuclear deal.

Prior political experience

Mast first won election in 2016 with 53% of the vote in Florida's 18th district against Democrat Randy Perkins. In 2018, he won reelection with 54% against Democrat Lauren Baer. Following redistricting, Florida's 18th became district 21. In 2022, Mast won the Republican primary with 78.1% and the general election with 63.5% against Democrat Corinna Robinson. In 2024, he defeated Democrat Thomas Witkop with 61.8% of the vote. The 2020 election data in the source material appears duplicative and unclear.
