Biography
Overview
Bryan Steil is a Republican U.S. Representative from Wisconsin's 1st congressional district, serving since 2019. An attorney and former businessman from Janesville, he previously worked in the manufacturing industry and served on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. He is currently chair of the House Administration Committee and chair of the Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Artificial Intelligence subcommittee.
Career
Since entering Congress in 2019, Steil has secured reelection three times with consistent margins (54-59% of the vote). As House Administration Committee chair since 2023, he led hearings that contributed to the removal of the Architect of the Capitol for wrongdoing. His legislative efforts focus on financial sector regulation, veteran and Capitol Police benefits, and election-related measures. He sponsored the Protecting Americans' Retirement Savings From Politics Act and legislation addressing insider trading.
Prior political experience
Steil won the 2018 Republican primary to succeed retiring Speaker Paul Ryan and defeated Democrat Randy Bryce in the general election with 54.6% of the vote. He was reelected in 2020 with 59.3% against Roger Polack, in 2022 with 54.1% against Ann Roe and an independent challenger, and in 2024 with 54.0% against Peter Barca and a Green Party nominee. All victories were against Democratic opponents, with margins ranging from 54-59%.
