Biography
Overview
Byron Donalds is a Republican U.S. House representative from Florida's 19th congressional district, serving since 2021. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he earned a bachelor's degree in finance and marketing from Florida State University in 2002. Prior to entering politics, he worked in finance, insurance, and banking. He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2016 to 2020 before being elected to Congress in 2020, defeating Democratic nominee Cindy Banyai. He is associated with the conservative/MAGA wing of the Republican Party and was a member of the Tea Party movement.
Career
In Congress, Donalds has been nominated for Speaker of the House twice (January and October 2023). He was a member of the "Freedom Force," a group of incoming House Republicans in 2020. He led questioning during a 2023 House subcommittee hearing on Hurricane Ian recovery, which resulted in discovering federal regulatory and administrative barriers to recovery efforts. In 2025, he announced his candidacy for governor of Florida in the 2026 election. Prior to Congress, he chaired the Insurance and Banking Subcommittee in the Florida House.
Prior political experience
Donalds ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House in Florida's 19th district in 2012, finishing fifth of six candidates. He was elected to the Florida House in 2016 for District 80. In 2020, Donalds won a crowded Republican primary by 770 votes over state representative Dane Eagle. He was elected to Congress in 2020 with 203,213 votes (60.0% of the vote), defeating Democratic nominee Cindy Banyai. In January 2021, he objected to the certification of electors from Arizona and Pennsylvania in the 2020 presidential election.
