Biography

Overview

Chellie Pingree is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Maine's 1st congressional district, serving since 2009. She is the first Democratic woman elected to the U.S. House from Maine. Before Congress, she served in the Maine Senate from 1992 to 2000, where she was majority leader for her final four years. Pingree was president and CEO of Common Cause from 2003 to 2006 and ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2002 against Republican Susan Collins.

Career

In the Maine Senate, Pingree authored the nation's first bill regulating prescription drug prices (Maine Rx) and shepherded Maine's largest land-bill initiative (Land for Maine's Future). In Congress, she joined the Congressional Progressive Caucus and now serves as vice chair. She has been reelected eight times since 2008, winning with increasing margins. She voted to impeach President Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021, and has consistently opposed military interventions abroad.

Prior political experience

Pingree was first elected to the Maine Senate in 1992, winning every town in her district except Belmont. She was term-limited out in 2000 after serving four terms. She was first elected to Congress in 2008, defeating Republican Charlie Summers 54.9% to 45.1%. She has been reelected seven times: 2010 (57%-43% vs. Dean Scontras), 2012 (64.8%-35.2% vs. Jonathan Courtney), 2014 (60% vs. Isaac Misiuk), 2016 (won by about 16 points vs. Mark Holbrook), 2018 (won by about 26 points vs. Holbrook), 2020 (62.2%-37.8% vs. Jay Allen), 2022 (24-point victory vs. Edwin Thelander), and 2024 (58% vs. Ronald Russell, with Independent Ethan Alcorn taking 4.9%).
