Biography

Overview

Christopher Murphy is a Democrat serving as the junior U.S. Senator from Connecticut since 2013. Born August 3, 1973, Murphy is a lawyer who previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives (2007–2013) representing Connecticut's 5th district, and in both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly. He was first elected to the Senate in 2012 at age 39, becoming the youngest senator of the 113th Congress, and was reelected in 2018 and 2024.

Career

Murphy has achieved significant legislative accomplishments including the Mental Health Reform Act of 2015, which passed the Senate HELP Committee unanimously and was signed into law as part of the 21st Century Cures Act in December 2016. He co-authored the bipartisan Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act (2016) and the Fix NICS Act (2017), both of which became law. He led Democratic negotiations resulting in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, landmark gun-safety legislation. He has been instrumental in organizing congressional ethics reforms, including the creation of the Office of Congressional Ethics (2008), and has championed the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Commuter Rail Line, which began operation in 2018.

Prior political experience

Murphy was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 with 55% of the vote, winning every county except Litchfield County, defeating Democrat Susan Bysiewicz in the primary and Republican Linda McMahon in the general election. The race was the most expensive political race in Connecticut history at that time. He was reelected in 2018 with 59.5% of the vote, defeating Republican Matt Corey. In 2024, Murphy was unanimously selected as the Democratic nominee and won a third term, again defeating Republican Matt Corey along with Green and independent candidates.
