Biography

Overview

Chuck Edwards is a Republican U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 11th congressional district, serving since 2023. Previously, he represented the 48th district in the North Carolina Senate from 2016 to 2023. Born in Waynesville, North Carolina, Edwards has a background in business operations and economic development, having worked for McDonald's and various financial institutions before entering politics.

Career

In the North Carolina Senate, Edwards won special election in 2016 and was reelected in 2018 and 2020. In 2022, he defeated incumbent Madison Cawthorn in the Republican primary for the U.S. House seat with 33.4% of the vote. In Congress, he has introduced legislation on election administration, veterans benefits, disaster recovery, and immigration policy. Edwards was sanctioned by the House Communications Standards Commission in April 2024 for making personal attacks against President Biden and Hunter Biden in mass communications sent at taxpayer expense.

Prior political experience

Edwards was appointed to the North Carolina Senate in August 2016 following Tom Apodaca's resignation. He was elected to that seat in 2016, defeating Democrat Norman Bossert, and was reelected in 2018 and 2020. In the 2022 Republican primary for Congress, Edwards received 33.4% of the vote and defeated incumbent Madison Cawthorn with a margin of 1,338 votes overall. He carried Buncombe County, the district's most populous, by over 2,000 votes and won Henderson County by 3,191 votes, though he lost 12 of the district's 15 counties.
