Biography

Overview

Chuck Fleischmann is a Republican U.S. Representative from Tennessee's 3rd congressional district, a position he has held since 2011. The district includes Chattanooga and much of East Tennessee, including Oak Ridge. Fleischmann is an attorney who founded his own law firm in Chattanooga in 1987 before entering politics.

Career

Fleischmann has secured significant federal spending for his district, including $273.3 million in 2024 earmarks—the highest in Congress that year, primarily for the Chickamauga Dam lock replacement project. He has sponsored bills addressing quantum research, energy and water development appropriations, and government spending efficiency. He leads the House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus and has proposed funding for advanced nuclear energy projects. His first vote in office was against the health care bill repeal motion in 2011.

Prior political experience

Fleischmann was first elected in 2010 in an 11-candidate Republican primary, winning with 30% of the vote against former state GOP chair Robin Smith. He won the general election with 57% against Democrat John Wolfe. He has won reelection consistently with increasing margins: 2012 (defeated primary opponents and Democrat Mary Headrick), 2014 (62.3% against Headrick), 2016 (66.4%), 2018 (63.7%), 2020 (67.3%), 2022 (68.4%), and 2024 (67.5% against Democrat Jack Allen). The district is heavily Republican.
