Biography

Overview

Dan Newhouse is a Republican U.S. House representative from Washington's 4th congressional district, serving since 2015. Before his election to Congress, he served as director of the Washington State Department of Agriculture and as a member of the Washington House of Representatives. He holds a degree in agricultural economics from Washington State University and owns a 600-acre farm in Sunnyside that produces hops, tree fruit, grapes, and alfalfa. He announced in December 2025 that he will not seek a seventh term in 2026.

Career

Newhouse has championed legislation protecting American agriculture from foreign acquisition, promoting agricultural exports, and expanding renewable energy in rural communities. He has supported infrastructure for rural hospitals serving tribal lands. In Congress, he was one of only ten House Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump following the January 6 Capitol riot, citing Trump's incitement of violence and failure to act. He also voted to establish the January 6 commission. On social issues, he voted for the Respect for Marriage Act to protect same-sex marriage. He has been vocal in Congress about Chinese biotechnology development and advocated for U.S. leadership in alternative proteins for food security. Despite supporting budget cuts broadly, he has criticized cuts to agricultural programs.

Prior political experience

Newhouse was first elected to Congress in 2014, defeating Tea Party Republican Clint Didier in a race that was described as close and competitive. He faced Didier again in 2016, placing first in the blanket primary with 45.77% of votes and defeating him in the general election with 57.64% of votes. In 2018, election data shows he received 141,551 votes (62.8%), indicating a strong general election victory. In 2024, he defeated a challenge from more conservative Republican Jerrod Sessler, who criticized Newhouse's vote to impeach Trump. Newhouse is one of only two Republicans who voted to impeach Trump and won renomination and reelection in 2022 and 2024. He announced on December 17, 2025, that he will not seek a seventh term in 2026.
