Biography

Overview

Daniel Webster is a Republican U.S. House representative serving Florida's 11th congressional district since 2017. First elected to Congress in 2010, Webster is a businessman who owns an air conditioning and heating company. He previously served 28 years in the Florida legislature, including as the first Republican Speaker of the Florida House since Reconstruction. Webster is the longest-serving legislator in Florida history.

Career

Webster's most significant legislative achievement was the 1985 Home Education Program Act, which legalized homeschooling in Florida—legislation he considers his most important. As Florida House Speaker (1996-1998), he secured $2.5 billion in bond funding for school construction and received multiple legislative awards. In Congress, Webster has run three times for Speaker of the House (receiving 12, 9, and 1 votes respectively) but has not held the position. He announced his retirement in April 2026, following the 2026 elections.

Prior political experience

Webster was first elected to the U.S. House in 2010, winning Florida's 8th district with 56% of the vote over Democrat Alan Grayson's 38%. Due to redistricting, he moved to the 10th district in 2012, defeating Chief of Police Val Demings 52% to 48%. He was reelected to the 10th in 2014 with 62% over Republican primary and general election opponents. In 2016, he switched to the 11th district, winning the Republican primary 60%-40% and the general election 65%-32% over Democrat Dave Koller. He won reelection in the 11th in 2018 (65%-35%), 2020 (67%-33%), and 2022 (63%-35%), defeating a 2022 primary challenge from far-right activist Laura Loomer by 51%-44%.
