Biography
Overview
Danny K. Davis is a Democrat representing Illinois's 7th congressional district since 1997. The district includes much of western Chicago, the Loop, and inner western suburbs like Oak Park and Bellwood. Davis is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and served on the Chicago City Council and Cook County Board of Commissioners before entering Congress. He announced in July 2025 that he will not seek reelection in 2026.
Career
In Congress since 1997, Davis has championed policies supporting vulnerable populations, including foster youth, low-income families, and workers transitioning back into employment. His sponsored bills address adoption support, child care access, workforce training in health fields, and strengthening social safety net programs. He chairs the Congressional Postal Caucus and co-chairs the Caucus on Re-Entry.
Prior political experience
Davis was first elected to the U.S. House in 1996 in a competitive primary with 11 candidates. He won the Democratic primary on March 20, 1996, receiving more votes than the two closest candidates combined. In the general election on November 5, 1996, Davis defeated Republican Randy Borow and three third-party candidates with over 82% of the vote. He has served continuously since 1997.
