Overview
David Kustoff is a Republican U.S. Representative from Tennessee's 8th congressional district, serving since 2017. He is an attorney who previously served as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee from 2006 to 2008. Kustoff is one of four Jewish Republicans currently in Congress.
Career
As U.S. Attorney (2006-2008), Kustoff prosecuted Operation Tennessee Waltz, resulting in the conviction of prominent Tennessee politician John Ford and others. He also contributed to Operation Safe Community to reduce crime in Memphis. In Congress, he has sponsored bills focused on healthcare access, tax policy reform, and criminal justice, though most remain in committee status.
Prior political experience
Kustoff won the 2016 Republican primary for Tennessee's 8th congressional district with a plurality of 27.45% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Shelby County commissioner George Flinn's 23.08%. In the general election, he defeated Democrat Rickey Hobson with 68.8% of the vote. In 2018, he won his Republican primary renomination against Flinn with 56.00% of the vote to Flinn's 39.67%.
