Biography
Overview
David McCormick is a Republican U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, serving since January 2025. A former Army officer who served in Iraq during the Gulf War and received the Bronze Star, McCormick earned a Ph.D. in international relations from Princeton University. He served as Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs in the George W. Bush administration (2007-2009) and was CEO of Bridgewater Associates, one of the world's largest hedge funds, from 2020 to 2022. He is known for his expertise in international economic policy, national security, and energy issues.
Career
Since taking office in January 2025, McCormick has focused on advancing bills addressing China policy, energy security, and international affairs. He has not yet compiled a legislative record of passed bills in the Senate. Before his Senate service, he built a career in the Bush administration negotiating international economic agreements (including the India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement), managing export controls, and coordinating financial crisis response. As a private sector executive, he led Bridgewater Associates and previously was CEO of FreeMarkets, which grew to a $500 million acquisition.
Prior political experience
McCormick first ran for U.S. Senate in 2022 in Pennsylvania's open seat race. In the Republican primary, he lost narrowly to Mehmet Oz (31.1% to 31.2%), with the margin less than 1,000 votes and triggering an automatic recount. Oz went on to lose the general election to Democrat John Fetterman. In 2024, McCormick ran again for Pennsylvania's Class 1 Senate seat and defeated three-term Democratic incumbent Bob Casey Jr. in what was widely considered an upset. McCormick was endorsed by the Pennsylvania Republican Party and by Donald Trump. Fox News called the race for McCormick on November 7, 2024. He took office on January 3, 2025.
