Overview
David Patrick Joyce is a Republican U.S. Representative from Ohio's 14th district, serving since 2013. He is an attorney and former Geauga County prosecutor who chairs the Republican Governance Group, a group of moderate Republicans in the House. Joyce has a background in law enforcement and criminal prosecution, including work on high-profile cases in Ohio.
Career
Joyce has championed bipartisan initiatives on cannabis reform, introducing multiple bills to protect state cannabis laws from federal interference and to expand access for veterans. He supported establishing the January 6 commission and voted for the Respect for Marriage Act codifying same-sex marriage rights. He has also sponsored bills on health care workforce development, criminal justice reform, environmental protection, border security, and retail crime enforcement. As Geauga County prosecutor, he handled the prosecution of the 2012 Chardon High School shooting.
Prior political experience
Joyce was first elected to Congress in 2012 with 54% of the vote after being selected as the Republican nominee following Representative Steve LaTourette's retirement announcement. He won reelection in 2014 with 63.3% of the vote despite a challenging primary and general election. In 2016, he defeated his opponent with 62.6% of the vote. In 2020, he received 238,864 votes representing 60.1% of the vote in his district.
