Biography

Overview

Delia Ramirez is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Illinois's 3rd congressional district, serving since 2023. The daughter of undocumented immigrants from Guatemala, she was the first Guatemalan American elected to the Illinois General Assembly. Before her election to Congress, she served in the Illinois House of Representatives (2018–2023), where she focused on housing, eviction protection, and Medicaid expansion for undocumented seniors.

Career

In the Illinois House, Ramirez successfully expanded Medicaid to undocumented seniors—making Illinois the first state to do so—and secured increased funding for pandemic-related tenant and landlord relief. She also passed the COVID-19 Emergency Housing Act, which included provisions for $1 billion in federal rent relief and extended eviction moratoriums. In Congress, she has introduced legislation on veterans' benefits, housing protections, campaign finance reform, and homeland security oversight.

Prior political experience

Ramirez was first elected to the U.S. House in 2022, winning the Democratic primary with 66% of the vote against Gilbert Villegas and Iymen Chehade. She defeated Republican Justin Burau in the general election with 68.5% of the vote. In 2024, she ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and defeated Republican John Booras in the general election with 67.3% of the vote.
