Biography

Overview

Diana DeGette is a Democrat representing Colorado's 1st congressional district since 1997. A lawyer by training, she previously served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. She is the dean of Colorado's congressional delegation and has served as a chief deputy whip from 2005 to 2019. She is currently serving as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce's health subcommittee.

Career

DeGette co-sponsored the Stem Cell Research Act of 2011 and authored a Colorado law guaranteeing women unobstructed access to abortion clinics, which was upheld as constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. She sponsored legislation lifting limits on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research in 2005, which passed the House and Senate but was vetoed by President Bush. She was named an impeachment manager for the second impeachment trial of President Trump in 2021 and served as speaker pro tempore during the first impeachment vote in 2019.

Prior political experience

DeGette was first elected to the U.S. House in 1996 with 57% of the vote, winning the primary with 55% against former City Council member Tim Sandos. She has been reelected 15 times since her initial election. Colorado's 1st district has been in Democratic hands for all but four years since 1933.
