Overview

Ed Case is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Hawaii's 1st congressional district, serving since 2019. A lawyer and former state legislator who served as Hawaii House Majority Leader, Case previously represented Hawaii's 2nd district from 2003-2007. Born September 27, 1952, he is known as a centrist or conservative Democrat who serves on the House Appropriations Committee with focus on defense and homeland security issues.

Career

Case has passed legislation expanding national parks (Kaloko-Honokohau expansion and Kilauea Point refuge) and designated the Patsy Takemoto Mink Post Office Building. He co-founded the Congressional Pacific Islands Caucus in 2019 to increase Indo-Pacific attention. As a Hawaii legislator, he served as Majority Leader and pushed for government efficiency and fiscal responsibility. In Congress, he supported the Iraq War and has focused on maritime commerce, environmental protection, and expanding federal recognition of Hawaiian cultural sites.

Prior political experience

Case was first elected to Congress in a November 2002 special election with over 50% of the vote to fill Patsy Mink's seat, then won a second special election in January 2003 with 43%. He won his first full term in 2004 with 63% against Republican Mike Gabbard. After losing U.S. Senate races in 2006 and 2012, and finishing third in a 2010 special election, he returned to win Hawaii's 1st district in 2018 with 73.1% of the vote. He was reelected in 2020 with 72.02%.
