Elissa Slotkin is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Michigan, serving since 2025. A former CIA analyst and Department of Defense official who held the position of acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Slotkin served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2019 to 2025 representing Michigan's 8th and later 7th congressional districts. She was elected to the Senate in 2024, defeating Republican Mike Rogers, and is the second female senator from Michigan.

Career

Slotkin's legislative achievements include voting to impeach President Trump in both his first and second impeachments and being credited with initiating the House impeachment inquiry through a Washington Post op-ed co-authored with other freshmen Democrats. In the House, she chaired the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence and was vice chair of the Readiness Subcommittee. She introduced gun safety legislation including the Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act and the Gun Violence Prevention Research Act. She sponsored the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and the 2020 Iran War Powers Resolution. In the Senate, she gave the official Democratic response to President Trump's 2025 State of the Union address and has presented proposals on middle-class economic security.

Prior political experience

Slotkin was first elected to the House in 2018, defeating Republican Mike Bishop with 50.6% of the vote. In 2020, she was reelected with 50.9% against Paul Junge. In 2022, following redistricting, she won her district (renumbered as the 7th) with 51.5% against Tom Barrett, in what became the most expensive U.S. House race that year. In 2024, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, winning the Democratic primary with 76% of the vote and defeating Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the general election.
