Biography
Overview
Eric Schmitt is a Republican U.S. Senator from Missouri, serving since 2023. Before his Senate election in 2022, he served as Missouri's Attorney General (2019-2023) and State Treasurer (2017-2019). Earlier in his career, he represented Missouri's 15th State Senate district from 2009 to 2017 and served as an alderman in Glendale. Schmitt is an attorney admitted to the Missouri bar in 2000.
Career
As state senator, Schmitt championed tax cuts and expanded benefits for disabled citizens. He led a bipartisan effort to eliminate traffic ticket quotas and limit local government revenue from fines after Ferguson unrest. As state treasurer, he created the MO ABLE savings program and the Show-Me Checkbook transparency website. As attorney general, he launched the SAFE Kit Initiative to reduce the backlog of untested sexual assault kits and prosecuted a murder case in St. Louis—the first time a Missouri attorney general had done so. He also filed 25 lawsuits against the Biden administration on various policy matters.
Prior political experience
Schmitt was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, winning the Republican primary on August 2, 2022, with 45.6% of the vote (facing two other candidates named Eric). He won the general election with 55.4% of the vote, defeating Democratic nominee Trudy Busch Valentine by a margin of 13.2 percentage points. As a Missouri state senator, he ran unopposed in both the primary and general elections in 2012. In 2016, he was elected State Treasurer of Missouri after running unopposed in the Republican primary.
