Biography
Overview
Eugene Vindman is a Democrat representing Virginia's 7th congressional district in the U.S. House since 2025. A retired Army Lieutenant Colonel and lawyer, Vindman served as a deputy legal advisor to the National Security Council during the Trump administration, where he reported President Trump's 2019 phone call to Ukraine to White House counsel. This action contributed to Trump's first impeachment. Born in Ukraine in 1975, Vindman immigrated to the U.S. as a three-year-old and served 25 years in the Army before retiring in 2022.
Career
Vindman's primary achievement as a House member is limited, as he assumed office in January 2025. His legislative efforts focus on sponsored bills still in committee. He is notably a member of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus and has taken positions on military intervention, voting in March 2026 in favor of H.Con.Res. 38, a War Powers Resolution opposing U.S. military involvement in Iran without legal justification. His earlier prominence stems from his NSC role, where he reported the Trump-Ukraine call that led to Trump's first impeachment, and his subsequent work with the European Union and U.S. coordinating war crimes investigations in Ukraine.
Prior political experience
Vindman won the 2024 Democratic primary on June 18, 2024, and defeated Republican Derrick Anderson in the November 5, 2024 general election, assuming office on January 3, 2025. According to Wikipedia, he raised $5 million and had $876,000 on hand as of May 29, 2024, with an additional $1.3 million in independent expenditures from cryptocurrency advocacy group Protect Progress PAC and VoteVets. He is planning to run for Virginia's 1st congressional district in 2026 due to redistricting.
