Overview

Grace Meng is a Democratic U.S. Representative from New York's 6th congressional district (based in Queens), serving since 2013. A lawyer and former New York State Assembly member, she was the first Asian American elected to Congress from New York. Her district includes neighborhoods like Bayside, Flushing, Forest Hills, Jackson Heights, and Kew Gardens.

Career

As a New York Assembly member (2009-2012), Meng authored the Reverse Mortgage Act of 2009, which protected senior citizens' property tax exemptions. In Congress, she has championed anti-Asian hate crime awareness (House Resolution 151 in 2021), menstrual product safety labeling, and postal service accountability. She was named to City & State's "40 Under 40" list in 2009. She chairs the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and supports increased transparency and accountability in federal law enforcement.

Prior political experience

Meng was first elected to Congress in 2012, defeating Republican Dan Halloran in the general election after winning a Democratic primary against Assembly members Rory Lancman and Elizabeth Crowley. She has run unopposed in Democratic primaries in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2024. In 2020, she won her primary with 65.5% of the vote against two challengers and defeated a Republican in the general election. In 2026, Democratic challenger Chuck Park is running against her in the primary.
