Biography

Overview

Greg Stanton is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Arizona's 4th congressional district, serving since 2019. He is a lawyer and former mayor of Phoenix (2012–2018) and city council member (2000–2009). Stanton is known for his work on infrastructure, foreign affairs, and Chinese economic competition policy.

Career

As Phoenix mayor, Stanton expanded light rail, bike lanes, and sidewalks while reducing greenhouse gas emissions—efforts recognized by Governing magazine in 2017. As Deputy Attorney General (2009–2011), he worked to cut cartel funding, combat predatory lending, eliminate mortgage fraud, and protect Luke Air Force Base. In Congress, he has sponsored bipartisan infrastructure and supply chain security bills. He chairs the House Democratic Immigration Task Force and supports LGBTQ+ civil rights protections.

Prior political experience

Stanton was first elected to Congress in 2018 with 61% of the vote (319,166 votes), running unopposed in the Democratic primary after Republican Kyrsten Sinema vacated the seat to run for Senate. He was reelected in 2020 with 61% of the vote (unopposed in the primary), in 2022 with 56% of the vote following redistricting, and again in 2024.
