Biography

Overview

Gregory F. Murphy is a Republican U.S. House representative from North Carolina's 3rd congressional district, serving since 2019. A urologist by training, Murphy previously served in the North Carolina General Assembly from 2015 to 2019. He was born March 5, 1963, in Tarrytown, New York, and is based in Greenville, North Carolina, where he maintained a medical practice and served as Chief of Staff of Vidant Medical Center.

Career

In the North Carolina General Assembly, Murphy championed healthcare initiatives, including introducing the state's first major opioid prevention legislation (STOP Act) in 2017 and the HOPE Act to curtail drug trafficking. These efforts contributed to reducing North Carolina's opioid overdose deaths for the first time in over a decade. He also advanced legislation to improve veterans' access to hyperbaric oxygen therapy for traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, and introduced measures to improve birthing standards for birth centers following newborn deaths. In Congress, he continues to focus on healthcare and veterans' issues.

Prior political experience

Murphy was appointed to the North Carolina General Assembly in November 2015 to finish a term representing Pitt County's 9th District. He was elected to that seat in 2016 with 57.52% of the vote (22,540 votes) against Democrat Brian Farkas (42.48%, 16,648 votes). He was reelected to the state legislature in 2018, defeating Kristoffer Rixon. In a 2019 special election for North Carolina's 3rd congressional district, Murphy won a runoff with 59.7% against pediatrician Joan Perry (40.3%). In the September 2019 general election, he defeated former Greenville Mayor Allen M. Thomas with 61.7% to 37.5%. In 2020, Murphy ran unopposed in the Republican primary and won the general election over Democrat Daryl Farrow with 63.5% of the vote.
