Biography

Overview

Gregory Meeks is a Democratic U.S. Representative from New York's 5th District, serving since 1998. He is the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and previously chaired the committee from 2021 to 2023. Meeks is a lawyer who previously served in the New York State Assembly and holds a law degree from Howard University School of Law. He represents a diverse district in southeastern Queens that includes Jamaica, The Rockaways, and surrounding communities.

Career

Meeks was elected chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in December 2020 and served in that role through 2023. He participated in a bipartisan congressional delegation to the Philippines in 2007 and traveled to Malaysia with Speaker Pelosi in 2022. He delivered the keynote address at the P20 Bali summit in October 2022 on democratic values and international challenges. As Ranking Member of Foreign Affairs, he will become the dean of New York's House delegation in 2026 after other senior members retire.

Prior political experience

Meeks was first elected to the U.S. House in 1998 and has maintained his seat through subsequent elections. In 2012, he won his primary with 90% of the vote and was reelected in the general election.
