Overview

Hal Rogers is a Republican U.S. Representative from Kentucky's 5th congressional district, serving since 1981. A lawyer by training, he previously worked as commonwealth's attorney for Pulaski and Rockcastle counties. Rogers is the longest-serving Republican from Kentucky ever elected to federal office and the dean of the House of Representatives.

Career

Rogers secured federal funding that led to the naming of a water park in Williamsburg, Kentucky in 2001, and helped establish the Center for Rural Development in Somerset, Kentucky in 1996. He championed environmental protection programs across Appalachia and has been recognized for bipartisan negotiation skills. He introduced legislation related to the Mill Springs Battlefield and provided loan guarantees for Ukraine in 2014. President Clinton praised his role in supporting economic revitalization programs.

Prior political experience

Rogers won his first election to Congress in 1980 with 67% of the vote after winning the Republican primary with 23% of the vote. He has won reelection with over 65% of the vote in every election since 1980, except in 1992, when he defeated former Kentucky State Senate member John Doug Hays with 55% to 45%. His district is considered a Republican stronghold.
