Overview

J. Luis Correa is a Democratic U.S. Representative from California's 46th district, serving since 2017. His district includes most of the majority-Hispanic areas of Orange County, including Anaheim, Santa Ana, and parts of Orange. Before Congress, Correa worked as an investment banker, real estate broker, and college instructor. He previously served in the California State Senate (2006–2014) and California State Assembly (1999–2006).

Career

Correa has championed immigration and border security issues throughout his career. He was named to a bipartisan task force investigating the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in 2024. During the January 6 Capitol attack, he sheltered in the House gallery and was subsequently harassed at an airport. He opposed Trump's impeachment acquittal and called for invoking the Twenty-fifth Amendment. Earlier, he served on the Orange County Board of Supervisors as the first Democrat since 1987 and chaired multiple committees in the California State Assembly. He maintains 100% ratings from abortion rights organizations.

Prior political experience

Correa was first elected to Congress in 2016, winning the primary with 43.7% of the vote and the general election with 69.9%. In 2020, he was reelected with 157,803 votes (68.8%). Earlier, he won a California State Senate seat in 2006 by a narrow 1,392-vote margin, was reelected in 2010, but lost a 2015 special election for Orange County Board of Supervisors by 43 votes.
