Overview
Jack Reed is a Democrat and senior U.S. Senator from Rhode Island, serving since 1996. He is a former Army officer and lawyer who previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 1997. Reed graduated from West Point and Harvard University, and served on active duty in the Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division before transitioning to law and politics. He has been the dean of Rhode Island's congressional delegation since 1999.
Career
Reed has been a consistent voice on defense and armed services issues throughout his Senate career. He voted against the 2002 Iraq War authorization, calling it a flawed strategy, and supported President Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan. He initially supported Saudi-backed operations in Yemen but reversed his position by 2019. Reed has championed housing policy and worked on education and healthcare issues. He has proposed frameworks for managing artificial intelligence risks and co-sponsored the DREAM Act regarding immigration. According to a Morning Consult poll from April 2024, he was rated among the Top 10 most popular senators.
Prior political experience
Reed was first elected to the House in 1990 with 59% of the vote. He won reelection to the House in 1992 (71%) and 1994 (68%). In 1996, he won the Democratic primary with 86% of the vote and defeated Republican Nancy Mayer 63% to 35% in his first Senate election. He has won all subsequent reelections by large margins: 2002 (78% to 22%), 2008 (73% to 27%), 2014 (71% to 29%), and 2020 (67% to 33%). He was unopposed in Democratic primaries in 2002, 2008, and 2014. In February 2025, Reed expressed intent to run for a sixth term in 2026.
