Overview

James R. Baird is a Republican U.S. Representative for Indiana's 4th congressional district, serving since 2019. A Vietnam War veteran and businessman, Baird previously served in the Indiana House of Representatives (2010–2018) and as a Putnam County commissioner (2006–2010). He holds degrees in animal science from Purdue University and the University of Kentucky.

Career

Baird has sponsored legislation on agricultural technology and supply chain resilience, including bills on hemp regulation, bioindustrial scale-up, and export control coordination. He co-chairs the Agriculture Research Caucus and Research & Development Caucus. As a Vietnam War veteran who lost his left arm in combat, Baird was one of three deployed Vietnam veterans serving in the House as of the 116th Congress.

Prior political experience

Baird was first elected to the U.S. House in 2018, winning both the Republican primary and general election for Indiana's 4th district. He has been reelected three times: in 2020 with 66.6% of the vote, in 2022 with 68.2%, and in 2024 with 64.8%.
