Biography
Overview
Jamie Raskin is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Maryland's 8th congressional district, serving since 2017. He is a constitutional law attorney and former law professor at American University Washington College of Law. Before his election to Congress, Raskin served in the Maryland State Senate from 2007 to 2016. He is known for his work as lead impeachment manager during President Trump's second impeachment trial and for his progressive legislative positions.
Career
Raskin led the second impeachment effort against President Trump following the January 6 Capitol attack. He served on the House Select Committee investigating January 6, co-leading its seventh public hearing. He released a report in November 2025 detailing cryptocurrency policies used to benefit Trump and his family. In the Maryland State Senate, he championed death penalty repeal, medical marijuana legalization, same-sex marriage, voting reform (the National Popular Vote), and criminal justice reform.
Prior political experience
Raskin was first elected to Congress in 2016, winning the Democratic primary with 33% of the vote in a competitive seven-way race. He defeated Republican nominee Dan Cox in the general election with 60% of the vote. He was previously elected to the Maryland State Senate in 2006 after defeating incumbent Ida G. Ruben in the Democratic primary and ran unopposed in the general election for that seat. His congressional district has been heavily Democratic.
