Biography

Overview

Jan Schakowsky is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Illinois's 9th congressional district, serving since 1999. She represents Chicago's North Side and northern suburbs including Evanston, Skokie, and Arlington Heights. Previously, she served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1991 to 1998. She announced in May 2025 that she would not seek reelection in 2026.

Career

Schakowsky has championed women's rights, consumer protection, and healthcare reform throughout her 26-year congressional tenure. She was an early and vocal supporter of Barack Obama and opposed the Iraq War. She has consistently advocated for a public option in healthcare and supports single-payer health insurance. She has been a champion of LGBT rights, product safety oversight, and protections for workers and minorities. She has also been active on issues affecting Assyrian communities and has supported various resolutions on foreign policy matters.

Prior political experience

Schakowsky won the 1998 Democratic primary for Illinois's 9th district with 45.14% of the vote, defeating state senator Howard Carroll (34.40%) and future Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker (20.48%). She won the general election with 75% of the vote. She has been reelected 13 times. Recent election results include: 2018 with 73.5% (213,368 votes), 2016 with 66.5% (217,306 votes), and 2014 with 66.1% (141,000 votes). She has represented one of the most liberal congressional districts in the United States, historically regarded as Illinois's "Jewish seat."
