Biography

Overview

Jared Huffman is a Democratic U.S. Representative from California's 2nd district, serving since 2013. Born in Missouri in 1964, he is a lawyer who previously served in the California State Assembly (2006–2012) and as a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council. His district covers California's North Coast from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border.

Career

In the State Assembly, Huffman authored and passed more than 40 pieces of legislation, including a 2009 bill requiring California egg producers to comply with space requirements for laying hens (later expanded by 2018 Proposition 12) and co-sponsoring California's shark fin ban in 2011. In Congress, he has co-chaired the Congressional Freethought Caucus since 2018 and led the Stop Project 2025 Task Force to oppose Republican policy proposals. He was among 46 Democrats to vote against the 2023 Fiscal Responsibility Act.

Prior political experience

Huffman was first elected to Congress in 2012 with 71% of the vote, defeating Republican Dan Roberts. He has won reelection four consecutive times: 2014 (75%), 2016 (76.5%), 2018 (77%), and 2020 (75.7%). In 2022, he defeated Douglas Brower with 74.4% of the vote, and in 2024 defeated Chris Coulombe with 71.9% of the vote. He is running for reelection in 2026.
