Biography

Overview

Jasmine Crockett is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Texas's 30th congressional district, serving since 2023. Born in St. Louis and educated at Rhodes College and the University of Houston Law Center, she worked as a public defender in Bowie County, Texas, and later ran her own law firm representing victims of alleged police brutality. Before her election to Congress, she served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2021 to 2023, where she participated in a quorum break to protest voting restriction legislation.

Career

In the Texas House, Crockett co-authored three bills that became law, including legislation that waived certain in-court fees for formerly incarcerated people and criminalized financial abuse of the elderly. In Congress, she has secured $510,000 in community project funding for Glenn Heights and $80 million in federal infrastructure grants for North Texas through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. She introduced the Breonna Taylor Act to ban no-knock search warrants nationwide and the HELP FEDs Act to protect federal employees during government shutdowns. She was appointed to the House Judiciary Committee in January 2025 and serves as a leader on voting rights and criminal justice issues.

Prior political experience

Crockett was first elected to the Texas House in 2020, narrowly defeating incumbent Lorraine Birabil in a primary runoff before winning the general election unopposed. She was elected to Congress in 2022 after announcing her candidacy on November 24, 2021, receiving the backing of outgoing representative Eddie Bernice Johnson. She won a Democratic primary runoff election and then won the general election on November 8, 2022. In 2026, she ran for U.S. Senate in the Democratic primary but lost to state representative James Talarico on March 3, 2026.
