Biography

Overview

Jefferson Van Drew is a Republican U.S. Representative from New Jersey's 2nd congressional district, serving since 2019. Originally elected as a Democrat with 52.9% of the vote in 2018, he switched to the Republican Party in December 2019 after opposing Trump's impeachment. Before Congress, he served as a New Jersey state senator and assemblyman, mayor of Dennis Township, and Cape May County Freeholder. He holds a D.M.D. degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and operated a dental practice for 30 years.

Career

Van Drew successfully transitioned from local Democratic politics to Congress, then made a high-profile party switch tied to Trump's impeachment proceedings. As a legislator, he has sponsored bills addressing veteran benefits (TRICARE Fairness, Veterans Bill of Rights), military-related healthcare matters (Agent Orange Service Medal), and transportation infrastructure. He helped found the Offshore Wind Caucus but later became a vocal opponent of offshore wind energy. He was one of only 13 House Republicans to vote for the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. In 2025, he voted for the Republican One Big Beautiful Bill Act despite previously opposing Medicaid cuts.

Prior political experience

Van Drew was first elected to Congress in 2018, defeating Republican Seth Grossman 52.9% to 45.2%. He was reelected in 2020 after switching parties, defeating Democrat Amy Kennedy 52% to 46%. In 2022, he won his primary with 82% of the vote and the general election with 59.3% against Democrat Tim Alexander. In 2024, he ran unopposed in the Republican primary and won the general election with 58.1% of the vote.
