Overview

Jennifer Kiggans is a Republican U.S. Representative from Virginia's 2nd congressional district, serving since 2023. A former Navy helicopter pilot and geriatric nurse practitioner, Kiggans previously served in the Virginia State Senate from 2020 to 2022. She is known for being a moderate Republican who is willing to break with her party on certain issues.

Career

Kiggans was first elected to the House in 2022, narrowly defeating Democratic incumbent Elaine Luria with 52% of the vote, and was re-elected in 2024 with 51%. In Congress, she has championed veteran support, introducing multiple bills on military family childcare, veteran health, and pay. She voted to expel George Santos, opposed Jim Jordan's Speaker bid, and has led bipartisan efforts to extend healthcare subsidies set to expire in 2025. She advocates for NASA facilities and space industry investment in her district.

Prior political experience

Kiggans was first elected to Congress in 2022, defeating Democratic incumbent Elaine Luria 52% to 48% in Virginia's 2nd congressional district. She was re-elected in 2024, defeating Democrat Missy Cotter Smasal 51% to 47%. Prior to Congress, she was elected to the Virginia State Senate in 2019, winning a competitive race in the 7th district against Democrat Cheryl Turpin 50.4% to 49.5% after defeating Republican Carolyn Weems 52% to 48% in the primary.
