Biography

Overview

Jim Jordan is a Republican U.S. Representative from Ohio's 4th congressional district, where he has served since 2007. Currently in his 10th term, Jordan is a former two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and college wrestling coach. He is the current Chair of the House Judiciary Committee and serves on the House Oversight Committee. Jordan is a founding member and former chair of the House Freedom Caucus and is known as a close ally of former President Donald Trump.

Career

Jordan helped found the House Freedom Caucus in 2015 and served as its first chair, playing a key role in forcing Speaker John Boehner's resignation. He was Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee from 2019–2020 and Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee from 2020–2023 before becoming Chair. During Trump's first presidency, Jordan led efforts to discredit investigations into Russian interference and staged a sit-in to protest impeachment inquiry procedures. He supported legal challenges to the 2020 election results and voted against certifying the Electoral College. He has led multiple legislative investigations but, as of 2023, has never sponsored a bill that became law. In 2023, he ran unsuccessfully for Speaker of the House, garnering between 194 and 200 votes across three rounds before withdrawing.

Prior political experience

Jordan first ran for Congress in 2006 after 26-year incumbent Mike Oxley announced his retirement. He won the Republican primary and defeated Democratic nominee Rick Siferd in the general election with 60% of the vote. He was reelected in 2008 with 65% of the vote against Democrat Mike Carroll. In 2010, he won with 71% of the vote against Democrat Doug Litt and Libertarian Donald Kissick. Jordan was reelected in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024. While serving in the Ohio General Assembly, Jordan was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1994 and represented the 85th district for three terms. In 2000, he was elected to the Ohio Senate with 88% of the vote over independent Jack Kaffenberger, and reelected in 2004 with 79% of the vote.
