Biography

Overview

Jimmy Gomez is a Democrat representing California's 34th congressional district since 2017. His district includes Los Angeles neighborhoods such as Eagle Rock, Boyle Heights, Downtown Los Angeles, and Koreatown. Before his election to Congress, Gomez served in the California State Assembly from 2012 to 2017 and worked as a labor organizer for unions including UNAC/UHCP and AFSCME. He is a founding member of the Medicare for All Caucus and serves on multiple caucuses focused on civil rights, healthcare, and immigration.

Career

Gomez's key legislative achievements include co-founding the Congressional Medicare for All Caucus and introducing resolutions to expel Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert. In January 2021, he introduced legislation regarding Greene's social media conduct, and later championed expulsion following the State of the Union incident. He co-signed a letter condemning Azerbaijan's military offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh. Gomez received the 2022 NHMC Impact Award for Public Service and holds leadership positions including Assistant Whip of the Democratic Caucus and Chair of the Congressional Dads Caucus.

Prior political experience

Gomez was first elected in a 2017 special election to succeed Xavier Becerra. He finished first in the initial round with a plurality and defeated Democrat Robert Lee Ahn 60% to 40% in the June 6, 2017 runoff. In 2018, he defeated Green Party candidate Kenneth Mejia with 72.5% of the vote. In 2020, Gomez narrowly defeated fellow Democrat David Kim 53% to 47%. In 2022, Kim again challenged Gomez, who won with 51% to 48%. In 2024, Gomez defeated Kim a third time with 55% to 44%. Gomez is running for reelection in 2026 and faces multiple primary challengers.
