Overview
Joe Neguse is a Democratic U.S. representative from Colorado's 2nd congressional district (based in Fort Collins, Boulder, and Longmont), serving since 2019. The first Eritrean-American elected to Congress and Colorado's first Black member of the House, Neguse is a lawyer who has held leadership positions including House assistant Democratic leader since 2024. His district spans northwest Colorado including mountain towns and rural communities.
Career
Neguse's key legislative achievements include serving as the youngest House impeachment manager in U.S. history during Trump's second impeachment trial (2021). He was ranked as the second-most effective House Democrat in the 118th Congress by the Center for Effective Lawmaking. In 2024, his questioning of Kristi Noem during a Judiciary Committee hearing was credited with contributing to her removal as Secretary of Homeland Security. He was elected to House Democratic leadership positions, serving as co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee and later as House assistant Democratic leader. He consistently advocates for climate action, forest management, voting rights, and healthcare access.
Prior political experience
Neguse was first elected in 2018 with 60.2% of the general election vote, defeating Republican Peter Yu after winning the Democratic primary with 65.7% against Mark Williams in this heavily Democratic district. He was reelected in 2020 with 61.5% of the vote (defeating Charles Winn), in 2022 with 70.7% (defeating Marshall Dawson), and in 2024 with 68.4% (in a rematch against Marshall Dawson). He has consistently won all or nearly all counties in his district across all election cycles.
