Biography

Overview

John B. Larson is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Connecticut's 1st congressional district, serving since 1999. Born in Hartford in 1948, he worked as a high school history teacher and insurance agency co-owner before entering politics. He served in the Connecticut State Senate for six terms (1982–1998), including four years as president pro tempore, before being elected to Congress. He previously chaired the House Democratic Caucus during the 111th and 112th Congresses. The 1st district, based in the state capital, Hartford, is the most Democratic in Connecticut.

Career

Larson has been reelected 11 times with no substantive opposition, demonstrating strong support in his heavily Democratic district. Key legislative efforts include cosponsoring the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 focused on renewable energy and emissions reduction, and introducing the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010. He was a strong advocate for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In March 2025, he expressed frustration over Elon Musk's failure to appear before the Ways and Means Committee regarding DOGE data transparency. In April 2026, he filed articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

Prior political experience

Larson narrowly defeated Secretary of State Miles S. Rapoport in the 1998 Democratic primary for the 1st district seat when incumbent Barbara Kennelly retired to run for governor. His general election victory was widely considered a foregone conclusion given the district's strong Democratic lean. Since then, he has been reelected 11 times with no substantive opposition. In 2025, he faced calls to step aside due to age and a complex partial seizure he experienced in February, but he rejected these calls and stated he would seek reelection. For the first time since 1999, he faces serious Democratic primary challengers for the 2026 midterm elections.
