Overview

John Hoeven is a Republican U.S. Senator from North Dakota, serving since 2011. Before entering the Senate, he served as North Dakota's 31st governor from 2000 to 2010. Hoeven is also a banker and former president of the Bank of North Dakota. He is one of the wealthiest U.S. senators with an estimated net worth of $45 million.

Career

As governor, Hoeven oversaw a 49.5% increase in North Dakota's real gross domestic product and directed development of a multi-resource energy program that made the state a major energy producer. The state gained nearly 40,000 new jobs during his tenure and its financial reserve grew past $700 million. In December 2009, he had an 87% approval rating. In the Senate, he has focused on agriculture, energy development, and rural economic issues.

Prior political experience

Hoeven was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, defeating Democrat Tracy Potter with 76% of the vote. He was reelected in 2016 and 2022. As governor, he won three consecutive four-year terms: in 2000 with 55% of the vote against Heidi Heitkamp, in 2004 with 71% of the vote, and in 2008 with 74% of the vote.
